Ardmore Historic District: A Neighborhood for the Ages

One of the great things about living in a city is the opportunity to be part of a neighborhood. Residents of Ardmore, the largest historic district in Winston-Salem, know this first hand. With an active neighborhood association and community watch program, local parks and access to the schools of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System, the people of Ardmore know they live in a neighborhood with plenty of opportunity.

Ardmore has an interesting history, being the first suburb in Winston-Salem to be designed for the automobile. The other two suburbs that existed before Ardmore had access to the trolley for public transportation. But the rise in popularity of the automobile made people less reliant on public transportation, so the wonderful mix of Craftsmen-style bungalows and Victorian homes you find in Ardmore are almost always accompanied by a garage.

Today these homes provide an eclectic and beautiful background to a neighborhood that has set the tone in Winston-Salem for coming together as a community. Activities such as a Fourth of July picnic and public parks including the Bolton pool provide places for people to get to know each other and have fun hanging out together. In the evenings you’ll often see people out for an evening stroll, riding bikes and others walking dogs. Some homeowners even put out bowls of water so the dogs will have a break during their walks.
